The spirit of the Garden
About Us

OUR MISSION

We believe that by creating eclogically sound gardens, we are opening spaces of hope and abundance that can restore our ecological and spiritual ecosystems.

Our mission is to spread the healing principles of how to connect with natural ecosystems in a reciprocal way, so that every person, family and community can experience the transformative power of nature at their doorstep.

‘Many people think that regenerative gardening is about not touching the earth or that it looks messy. But regenerative gardening is about structured wildness. We need to see ourselves as the gardeners of the earth. We can actually reverse climate change and restore biodiversity by interacting with nature.’
Guillaume Maitre, founder

our STORY

Spirit of the Garden was founded by Guillaume Maitre who was born and raised on a small farm in the French Alps. The seeds for his passion for gardening can be traced back to his childhood where his father taught him the foundations of a natural approach to tending to the earth and the creatures that live there.

In 2014, Guillaume found himself in the UK and started his career as a gardener by maintaining traditional English gardens. The main goal of this paradigm is to establish gardens to a high standard through intense maintenance and control. In the years that followed, he experimented with permaculture principles and came to realise that there was a better way of interacting with the gardens that he was maintaining. Guillaume started proposing different approaches to his clients that reduced maintenance, energy, and money that went into their gardens. This realisation profoundly shifted his gardening paradigm towards regeneration giving way to the creation of ‘The Spirit of the Garden.’

Our PRinciples

BIOMIMICRY

By observing the natural world, we employ design methods that echo this intelligence, such as planting more adapted species in your garden.

WATER

We recognise that water is a central part of a healthy ecosystem and so our regenerative design systems make way for a sustainable use of water. For example, building natural, microbial-rich aquifers and using that water for your garden increases the quality and nutrients of plants compared to tap water.

soil

Healthy soil systems are the foundation of a healthy garden and planet. Our regenerative approach helps build healthy soil so as to limit erosion while increasing carbon sequestration and fertility of your land.

permaculture

Permaculture principles are equally human and nature friendly. They include using materials from the garden wherever possible, increasing plant density due to appropriate planting practices, and vertical growing to make a better use of space.

BIODIVERSITY & WILDLIFE

A regenerative approach to gardening allows for higher biodiversity and more wildlife to thrive. The increase of plant species and density as well as the introduction of water features is more attractive to both humans and wildlife. We also do not prune in the autumn period, which provides hibernating matter for insects in the colder months.

ORGANIC

A regenerative garden is by nature organic because chemical products kill life, while an organic approach is life-affirming. We do this by only using true - non GMO & non hybrid - seeds so as to eliminate the use of harmful pesticides. Rather than using chemical fertilisers, we use our own compost.

ABUNDANCE

By increasing and diversifying the flora in your garden, we increase the amount of pleasant colours and smells that emerge throughout the year due to constant flowering. By using true seeds, we propagate offspring from your own garden for free so that you can save your own seeds and plants and replant or gift them in the future.

less MAINTENANCE

The most practical and financial advantage of regenerative gardening is that although it requires a first investment, after the first 2 to 4 years, it significantly reduces the need for garden maintenance. Regenerative gardening is not just enriching biodiversity and wildlife. On the long term, it is also rewarding financial investment.

HEALING

By healing the land, you can heal yourself. After working in a corporate job, our founder Guillaume felt that regenerative gardening restored his sense of aliveness and purpose in life.
